Designing and teaching a policies and procedures course online
Situation
The Business and Management Department for the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Extension wanted to offer all its technical communication courses online. Because of his specialty in policies and procedures (P&P) and previous success in teaching his specialty on campus, UCLA Extension engaged Raymond Urgo to design, develop, and deliver a Web-based version of his course.
Action
Raymond transformed the classroom version of his course by applying principles of instructional design for online learning. He implemented such features of the Web-based software as online quizzes with instant feedback and forums for e-mail message discussions.
Results
UCLA Extension has offered Raymond’s P&P course internationally since 1999. It is the world’s first and only Web-based, continuing-education course, addressing P&P as a communication discipline. UCLA Extension and Raymond consistently receive high praise for this course, thereby enhancing knowledge in students and the reputation for the school internationally.
